Lunar New Year Celebrations

Lunar New Year Celebrations

Lunar New Year is the most important holiday for many Asian communities across the world. Though the ceremonious details may differ from region to region, the theme is largely the same: family and prosperity! (And good food, of course.)

In China, young adults working far from home return for the Lunar New Year. Families gather around their televisions for the biggest holiday show of the year – Spring Festival Gala – and enjoy a variety of Chinese New Year traditions such as: the iconic lion dance parades, eating auspicious foods like fish, and giving/receiving red envelopes of money for children to wish them health & success.

To celebrate a prosperous new year, Glow Cultural Center is happy to host many days of celebrations and activities leading up to the official LNY event, reminiscent of the traditional 15-day of celebration of old! All are welcome to join our family-friendly festivities every year, including draw-alongs, Chinese Yo-yo workshops, Chinese nursery rhymes, martial arts, and classical Chinese dance tryouts.

If you’re looking for something to do at home, GCC has prepared 24 bilingual mini videos – in English & Chinese, with animation and live narration – that share traditional customs and stories for each day leading up to and after the Lunar New Year. From “Xiao Nian” (December 23rd of the Lunar calendar) to the “Lantern Festival” (January 15th of the Lunar calendar) there are 24 days in total, each with a different activity. Follow along to make sure you’re gathering the most good luck for your Lunar New Year celebration!
