2025 Glow Snake Lunar New Year Celebration Wrap-up
February 2nd, 2025

Event Highlights
Our recent Lunar New Parade, Cultural Fair, and Chinese Variety Show brought together over 800 community members in a vibrant celebration of Chinese heritage and traditions. From children discovering traditional arts to accomplished performers sharing their talents, the event created meaningful connections across generations and cultures.
The festivities began with a vibrant Lunar New Year Attire parade down Main Street in Flushing, bringing together diverse community groups in a colorful display of cultural blessings. Led by the dynamic Lion Dance performance, the parade showcased participants in elaborate traditional costumes and featured the Chinese gods of good fortune, longevity, and money, creating a memorable spectacle for community members and spectators alike. Organizations in attendance included the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island, PS 24Q, NYBBC Taekwondo School, Hometown Associations, Fresh Meadow Line Dance group, and Chinese Theatre Works, which displayed an impressive two-person “Zhongkui” puppet and his retainers.

Once inside Flushing Town Hall, the first floor welcomed attendees with a Cultural Fair that featured an array of traditional arts, festival foods, local businesses, and community services. The traditional arts & crafts section included activities such as calligraphy, lantern making, dough figurine crafting, Peking opera mask coloring, sugar painting, an interactive “Discovery Your Zodiac” booth with stickers, and artistic cotton candy making. For participants who were feeling particularly hungry, there were potstickers, braised pork over rice, and the iconic tanghulu (traditional candied fruit).

Of course, our fair wouldn’t be complete without our dedicated community partners & organizations that offered LNY-related giveaways and a free opportunity to try out some of their services. This bazaar-style setting created an immersive environment where traditional crafts met modern community services, offering attendees both cultural enrichment and practical resources.

On the second floor, Glow’s 2025 Chinese Variety Show showcased a diverse array of traditional and contemporary performances. A festive tone was set with an opening Lion Dance by New York Choy Lee Fut, followed by the magical Face-Changing performance (川剧变脸) by Liping Zhang from Lina Liu Artist Group, a Traditional Northeast Chinese Folk Dance by Dance For The People, the Great Neck Hulusi Ensemble’s rendition of “The Clear Waters of Jade Lake,” New York Chinese Chorus performing classics including “恭喜恭喜” and “龙船调,” a lively demonstration of Chinese Yo-yo by Glow Cultural Center youth performers, a contemporary Asian pop song “Chinese Herbal Manual” fusing vocal, Chinese flute, pipa, and dance, St. Michael’s Catholic Academy’s heartwarming performance of “I want to say thank you,” Flushing Art Club’s holiday-appropriate “Fuwa: Happy Chinese New Year,” and of course, the headliners for this year, the Oriental Operatic Artists Association’s “The Essence of Peking Opera.”
With cultural dance presentations from multiple studios showcasing next-generation talent, and an interactive Peking Opera session engaging audience members, the program successfully balanced traditional Chinese performing arts with contemporary interpretations, featuring both established artists and emerging performers from our community.
